When Yakov knew that Yosef was alive,
The Holy Spirit returned to Israel
With promise that in Egypt he would thrive
And be redeemed in time from Egypt’s spell.
So to the place that Yosef had prepared
He came: rich lands, a Pharaoh well-disposed,
The elder sons now penitent, afeard,
Subdued to Yosef’s reign. Before they closed
His eyes saw far and deep to the end of all;
That vanished in a flash; yet he could see
To hint at many things that would befall
And bless them each in their diversity.
This, hearing as one nation, they received,
And knew it was for this that Yakov lived.
