Deuteronomy 1:1 - 3:22

"I am no man of words," Moshe had once protested
Before the Burning Bush when he was called to lead;
But he had taken on, because the Voice insisted,
The task of bringing forth and shepherding the freed.
And now on that sad height, commanded to resign
Both leadership and life, he stood above the throng
Of those who, desert-bred, were now to cross the line
Onto that promised earth for which our exiles long.
Not one was missing there, his voice was borne to all,
That none might later say they had not heard the call
To stand and to look back upon the road they’d lengthened
When lying spying tales had scattered them like birds:
That, hearing, they might see and be by vision strengthened,
He to whom G-d had spoken now spoke in his own words.
